Endodontists or root canal specialists are specialist dentists who had extra training and education through an Australian accredited program in one of the universities in Australia offering a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DCD) in the narrow filed of their specialty, Endodontics. While general dentists and endodontists both perform root canal treatment, endodontists perform this procedure much more often and they usually deal with more complex cases like calcified root canals, root resorption and root surgery. The additional training and higher treatment volume mean that endodontists are the highly skilled and fully experts in performing root canal treatments.
Endodontists perform multiple procedures, which are called endodontic treatments. Endodontic comprises of three parts:
“Endo” means inside,
“Odont” means tooth, and
“Ic” means related to.
Endodontics is the speciality in dentistry, in which endodontists, specialists in endodontics, are trained to perform complicated Root Canal Treatments (RCTs). Root canals are small spaces inside every root of a tooth, which might have been infected or inflamed due to decay, cracks and a faulty filling. Endodontic procedures compromised of:
Root canal treatments: Removes damaged, inflamed, or infected tooth pulp and fills spaces inside roots with root filling material to prevent reinfection.
Endodontic re-treatment: Removes and replaces the root filling materials from a previously filled root canal/s that had been re-infected.
Endodontic surgery or root surgery: Specialized surgery of the roots, such as apicoectomy (removal of the end, or tip, of a tooth’s root).
Emergency dental surgery: May involve repairing complex dental injuries or treating severe tooth infections. In other rare situations, diagnosing and treating a root resorption is done by either a surgical or a non-surgical procedure by endodontists.
Internal tooth whitening: if a root treated or traumatized tooth is discolored, an endodontist can perform tooth whitening by putting whitening or bleaching materials inside the crown of a tooth to remove discoloration and bring the natural tooth color back.
Post placement and Core reconstruction: in many occasions, a dentist or a prosthodontist might ask an endodontist to finish the root canal treatment by putting and gluing a post inside the root filled tooth.
